Cavalry Sword
Does America have a more formidable cavalry than the Mongols at their height?
Jimmy – I mean relative to the time, for example if America decided in needed to conquer most of europe, russia, the middle east and just about everything else could it do it?
Relative to the time (which many contributors disregarded…),you have-historically speaking-committed a… sacrilege;no cavalry in the History of our planet can compare with the feats of the Mongol cavalry otherwise known as the “Golden Horde”.We are speaking about the first
half of the 13th century when Temugjin(Genghis Khan) united the Mongol Tribes and his General and closed friend Sumbotai conquered
Eurasia from the Pacific to the Adriatic sea,and Western Europe(after the destruction of Estern and Central European powers,Poland,Germany,Hungary-the most powerful kingdom at that time)had nothing to confront them with.their success was due to:a) their military law “Yiasaki”making disobedience a criminal offence;b)the quality of the Mongol horse(Siberian pony),and the Mongol bow which had double range from other bows of its time;their organization into squadrons(100 horse),regiments(1000 horse)and corps(10000 horse-’Tuman’) all moving silently obeying the movements of signal flags.*
Sir Basil H. Liddel Heart in his famous treatise about armour and its uses after WWI has planned the maneuvres of armour imitating the movements of that legendary cavalry; and his most ardent pupil,General Heinz Guderian,father of Blitzkrieg and one of the Great Captains of History said:”they moved faster than our panzer divisions even more so since their logistics was minimal”.Mongol movements covered 70 kilometres a day whereas Guderian’s tanks in France advanced at their fastest 54 klm a day.
European cavalries were contact cavalries(sword-spear) Asian cavalries were firing cavalries(use of bow and arrow) Persians,Mongols Tartars and later Turks,and were naturally superior to the European cavalries until the coming of gunpowder(Russians anaihilate the Mongols at Kazan in 1555)
The Persian cavalry was utterly defeated by the cavalry of Alexander the Great led by himself and in 8 years conquered Asia until Hindus river,setting an unbroken record,but it is the only exception and Mongol
cavalry is an improvement on the Persian cavalry 800 years later.
In modern times the Hungarians set the leading improvements with their light brigates (18th century) followed by general Myrat and his cavalry at the the time of Napoleon,but already the developments in firearms dropped the cavalry into second role in the field if the soldiers could overcome their fear of thousands of horses thundering down at them;we can understand how Myrat was stopped at Krasnoye by the fire of 20000 Russians;
American cavalry features only in the Civil War when cavalry didn,t play any decisive role in the battlefield;as Mj General Bufford put it to his men at Gettysberg: “your horses are for TRANSPORTATION only, we fight on foot”and he chose the ground of the battlefield and held it until Reynolds arrived with his corps.
All the fanciful movements of ‘Jeb’ Stuart or the intelligent and incisive movements of Bedford Nathan Forest were of very little importance in the overall picture of the war,despite newspaper canvassing in Richmond.
In your American Continent the only cavalry of note was that of the Comanchies which according to some,was better even than the Austrian Cavalry,and Speaking about armour as a successor to cavalry
only the German Panzer divisions can be in good stead with the Mongols…
